A Day Trip To Pisa From Florence Italy

Leaning Tower of Pisa

When my travel partner and I were in Florence, we made an impromptu decision of going for a half a day trip to see the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was easy to get to the place, just about 1 hour by train from Florence and 20 minutes walk from the Pisa Centrale Station, we could see one of the most Instagram landmarks in Italy.

So, that day we went to Pisa, was a gloomy day. The sky was covered with grey clouds and it looked like it was going to rain. But this had not stopped us from having a good time there. We took the regional train early in the morning and reached Pisa before 9 am. Once the train stopped at the Pisa Centrale station, we took a stroll across the town to the tower. There were signages everywhere to guide the first-timers to the landmarks, so worries there. There were buses going to Leaning Tower of Pisa, but we decided to walk as this was the best way to explore the area.

Along the way, there were some streets lined with fashion shops, retails, coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and souvenirs shops. So if you haven’t gotten time for breakfast in Florence, you can try the bakery here. During our walk, we came across the Arno River and the University of Pisa.

The 20 minutes stroll just went by very quickly and before we knew it, we were at the Piazza del Miracoli. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was just right in front of us and I was in awe. Nothing compared to the real thing right in front of your eyes. It was huge and true to its name, leaning against one side where I was afraid it might topple onto me, haha…

To go for a climb in the tower, we had to reserve timed-tickets to enter the tower. So before we can do that, we went to the Baptistery, the Cathedral and the monumental graveyard. At the time of our visit, part of the cathedral was under renovation so from the photos shown below, you can see some part of it being covered by scaffolding.

When it was time for our little climb to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, we quickly moved towards the line with lots of people waiting for the same timing to enter the tower. You see, the tower is leaning to a certain angle, so of course, when we did our climb, some part of the stairs, we tended to slant towards one side and sometimes it was just normal stairways climb. Very interesting…

At the top of the tower, it’s another beautiful view of the town of Pisa.

I would say it is definitely worth the trip to go to Pisa if you are in Florence. A short distance of 1-hour train ride with 20 minutes walking time, you can see the famous landmark in Italy. Now I truly understand the concept of “seeing is believing” after this trip.
