Florence Duomo

The famous cathedral is the fourth largest in the world, after St. Peter’s in Rome, St. Paul’s in London and Milan’s Duomo. This Renaissance dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and it used nearly two centuries to finish the whole structure. The gothic style church has attracted millions of visitors yearly. Entrance is free but there is always a long queue to enter the church.

The interesting things about this UNESCO Heritage site are the Vasari’s fresco on the ceiling on the dome, the colossal clock with fresco portraits fo four Prophets, the exterior marble facade with green, pink and white colours, the climb to the top of the cupola and admire the impressive view of Florence city.

Do visit the Giotto’s bell tower and Baptistery just next to or opposite of the cathedral. Click here if you want to find out the entrance fee to the bell tower, baptistery and the climb to the top of the dome for the amazing view.

Palazzo Vecchio Museum (Museo di Palazzo Vecchio)

One of the top museums in Florence which is nestled between Florence Duomo and the famous Ponte Vecchio. Merely 7 minutes walk from Florence Duomo, this palace-turned-museum has a magnificent replica of Michelangelo’s David and Baccio Bandinelli’s Hercules and Cacus at the entrance of the museum.

Inside the museums, you get to admire the large wall fresco and ceilings by Vasari and his assistants, imposing statues and golden decorations surrounding the hall, courtyard and chambers. To preserve the artworks, the hall is dimly lit and you can see from my photo below.

Other interesting places to visit are the Studiolo of Francesco I, the Map Room and the death mask of Dante Alighieri. The Studiolo of Francesco I is a masterpiece by Vasari again and also consists of artworks by Ammannati and Giambologna. The Map Room has a big globe in the middle of the room and all different countries’ maps hanging on the walls for your perusal. If you know Dante Alighieri, the famous Florentine poet, then you should not miss this opportunity to see his death mask.

Ponte Vecchio

Dubbed the Old Bridge of Florence, it is lined with wooden-shuttered goldsmiths’ shops and souvenirs shops. One of the reasons this bridge is famous in Florence is the scenic view of Arno River. It is one of the hot spots for Instagrammers and tourists. If you can’t get a good photo while on the bridge, you can consider walking along the riverbanks and get a close-up view from there instead. Another reason for being a famous bridge is the secret passageway designed by Vasari for the Medici family when the powerful family decided to move their palace from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti, on the other side of Arno River. This connecting route from Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti was to enable the family to keep out of contact with the people they ruled during that period.
